Lambeau Field
Lambeau Field, then new City Stadium, opened on September 29, 1957 when the Green Bay Packers defeated the Chicago Bears 21-17 before a crowd of 32,132. Not surprisingly, Chicago fans are still whining about the game's outcome and blame the officiating to this day. The structure was renamed Lambeau Field after the death of Coach Curly Lambeau in 1965. The stadium begins its 39th year of operation in 1995. The facility underwent numerous facelifts to reach its present look. Built for a bargain $960,000, the stadium seated 32,150 originally but six major additions followed. In 1961, part of the south end was filled in and capacity increased to 38,669. Two years later, expansion brought the total number of seats to 42,327. That total grew to 50,861 in 1965 when the entire south end was filled in. Capacity reached 56,267 after the north end was filled in and the stadium became a complete bowl in 1970. In 1985, 72 luxury boxes were added. Depending on the source, the stadium then seated 57,091 or 57,113. Five years later, 36 additional boxes were constructed in time for the 1990 season and they boosted capacity to 59,543. Work was recently completed on luxury boxes above the north end for the 1996 season, raising total capacity over 60,000. For some reason, even though sitting in a luxury box is not at all like actually being at the game, these boxes are tremendously popular and are sold before they are even built. From 1925-56, the Packers played in old City Stadium. The team played at Hagemeister Park in 1921-22 and at Bellevue Park in 1923-24. The team has played at least one home game in Milwaukee since 1933. The Packers played at State Fair Park until 1951, then played at Marquette Stadium for a year in 1952. Milwaukee County Stadium became their home-away-from-home from 1953 through the 1994 season. Beginning this year, all home games will be played at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. Season tickets for both Green Bay and Milwaukee have been sold out in advance for decades. People fight over them in divorces and sue their siblings over their parents' wills. With an estimated 30,000 people on a waiting list and a turnover rate of about 20 names per year, it has been estimated that the last name on the list will reach the top in about 1400 years.
